Carmel by the Sea, also known as Carmel, have a rich history perfused with Native American, early Spanish and American History. The land was first inhabited by the Ohlone tribe. In 1602, a Spanish explorer named Carmelite Friar Sebastian Viscaino "discovered" what is known as Carmel Valley. Since the discovery, mission sites were built around the area to spread the Christian doctrine among the local native Americans. Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo is one of the 21 California missions that is preserved for us to remember.
